Talking up Books

I recently read a book I loved. So I went to my Romance Writers of America chapter meeting this weekend, and I was chatting with a bookseller about this book. We were deep in conversation, and she was promising to mail me the second book in this newish series, when another person came up and said, "Jen I read your book BATTERIES REQUIRED and loved it!" It was really nice to hear, but I immediately started telling her about this book I had just read.

It dawned on me I was selling her this other author! I had to laugh. I may not have this self-promotion thing down yet. But seriously, I think it's a good thing. We should talk about books. Nothing sells books better than word of mouth. So we continued on talking about books.

The book I loved? DARK LOVER by JR Ward. Lately, I've been reading paranormal. I tend to switch around in my reading.

What about you all? What's the last book you read (aside from Samantha Shaw!) that you just had to tell people about?

I tell everyone about the last book I read. And I am a big sharer of my books (I know a lot of people who just can't afford to buy them.) I love giving books as gifts.

I am a very chatty person and it becomes a problem. I do continuity critiques. When I've done a crit for an author and the story just rocks I want to share it with everyone. Drats! Yes I am a very good girl and don't. But when that book comes out in print, I will stand in the grocery store and sell a copy of it before I leave to a total stranger. Discuss what they enjoy and end up buying a book myself. It works great. I get to talk about a book I love and I am good - I don't drop the author's name as a personal friend or pat myself on the back. I just grin like the Chesire Cat.

Unfortunately I do not find your books here in my little town, but THANK YOU VERY MUCH AMAZON.COM Thrilled to Death arrives this week.

Hey, Cele! I love to talk about books I've read too. That's half half the fun! Even when people don't agree with me, it's interesting to hear other opinions.

That is really tough to keep quite about pre-pubbed books. I usually don't tell people that I'm friends with authors I'm talking up either.

The last book that I read was DON'T LOOK DOWN by Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer. It was interesting cuz he writes the male POV and she writes the female POV. It's good, you should check it out.

I think it's wonderful that you can share your favorite books with others.

I'm practically annoying about it myself. I take part in 2 yahoo book clubs and chat with several friends all the time about the books that I read. We meet for lunch just to swap books and talk about what we're reading.

Whenever, I see people in the book store that are just browsing and I'll say "Have you read....?" and make a recommendation. I've never once had anyone that didn't tell me about what they're reading and why.

The ultimate ice-breaker.

Hi Ktzmom, thanks for the tip on DON'T LOOK DOWN! I'm a Jenny Crusie fan :-)

Marie, that is an excellent ice breaker. Whenever I get quiet types at booksignings, I ask them what they like to read, and they usually start chatting away!

The last book I gushed over was HOPE'S CAPTIVE by Kate Lyon, what I'd classify as a "serious-themed" western romance with The Worst Book Cover In The History Of The World. A great romance between two wounded characters and a wonderful eye for research to name some of it's attributes.

Let's see, I also really enjoyed THE ROOFER by Erica Orloff, although I tend to give that one a qualified recommendation. It's very dark, gritty, violent and not what I would call anywhere near a romance. Definitely not a book for everyone since the heroine is the daughter of a mobster and her family features more dysfunction that a Dr. Phil primetime special. I enjoyed the character study most of all.

And I'm trying to give LOVER ETERNAL by J.R. Ward a chance! I'm just too distracted with Real Life me thinks....

Wendy, I've found I like most of the books you life (from your website and Romance Reader, so I'll have to try HOPE'S CAPTIVE and THE ROOFER.

I think it's funny that you don't aren't captivated LOVER ETERNAL. I read DARK LOVER first but I doubt that matters. Besides, this is the first author in a long time that's nearly turned me into a dreaded fan girl, so your skeptism has helped save me from the fan girl syndrome!
