A Rant...

The latest brouhaha between Barbara Walters and Star Jones Reynolds has me in a rant that I'm directing toward journalists. Especially female journalists...

If you want to be taken seriously as a woman then DO NOT REFER TO A BUSINESS DISPUTE BETWEEN TWO PROFESSIONAL WOMEN AS A CAT FIGHT.

Yes, I know the dispute has gotten dirty and has a humorous side. I understand that. But I've been hearing female newscasters, on air reporters, etc., making jokes about claws and cat fights. It just irritates me. Do they really need to resort to a demeaning stereotype?

Okay, I'll stop ranting. Besides Star and Barbara are getting an amazing amount of publicity out of this. From a promotional angle, it's interesting to watch. Will Star manage to parlay this publicity that she engineered into a job? Going up against Barbara Walters is a bit of a risk so we'll see if it pays off for her!

I hope you all have a great weekend and a wonderful, safe Fourth of July!

Here here Jen, you couldn't be more right on. There is nothing worse than listen to women demean other women. It's disgusting. Have a good holiday.

I agree...

Now from a female journalist view point...oh yeah, I agree.

There are several things about being a female in this industry (even though I am really, I mean, really little time) that make it harder. The first is being taken seriously, the second is you have to work a lot harder to be effective. Therefore anytime we jump on the "demean the other person" bandwagon we're just weakening our position and status in the industry.

Star Jones is cooking her goose I think. Barbara Walters, like Oprah, is total industry clout. Star Jones was a little industry star with no clout. Now she's biting the hand that fed her. The will both get attention (okay are getting attention) but will it be all Star wants? I think not.

Ktzmom, it's surprising that women who have worked so hard to break the stereotypes would be so careless with their words.

I know, how rude of Deb, Natalie and Allison to go to Thrillerfest without me! Actually, I usually just do one or two conferences a year, and I'm doing RWA this year.

I don't think I really have more insight...well maybe a little... To me, part of it is still the battle that reared it's head in the late sixities. So many women don't realise that ERA meant the right to choose, not a given right. It still means hardwork. But how many good investigative broadcast journalist are female? Christiana Amanpour is the first that will jump to my thoughts, the woman rocks. But most in the field, indepth, investigative journalist who are taken seriously and given serious limelight are male.

Then you have Barbara, who I think lowered herself to fluff and catty-ism with The View. She was the tops, and now she is harder to take serious.

It's a sign of the times that Barbara Walters gets more public attention for her celebrity interviews over her previous journalistic pieces. So I suppose we are all part of the problem.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Cele!
