The Public Spoke Out

Thank you to Dru and Kate Carlisle for alerting me to this.

O.J. Simpson's book deal and TV Special have been cancelled.

NEW YORK (Nov. 20) - After a firestorm of criticism, News. Corp. said Monday that it has canceled the O.J. Simpson book and TV special "If I Did It."

You know...I really try to avoid negativitiy and saying negative things...which is why I never commented on your (or anyone eles's) post about this subject.

But now I can positively say:

I am so stinkin' happy!

Yippy, skippy, joy, joy (happy dancing everywhere).

Thanks for the FYI! (And thank you, Dru and Kate for pointing it out.)

The sad part is that OJ received his advance in...well...advance. According to the news article that I read, he said people are naive to think he didn't get paid. He got his advance and he spent it already. On bills, he claimed, not his "kids' futures," as he'd first said. Well, duh.

As a writer, I had wondered why no one had mentioned that he'd received in advance, when they talked about the money going to the victims' families. They were offered money by the publishers, but they refused it. But OJ still got his advance.

I'm left with a horribly sick feeling in the pit of my stomach that the publishing house actually thought this was a good idea. Nobody should be thanking them for pulling the book. They pulled it so they wouldn't lose more money. It's already been speculated that the book will reach the shelves at a later date under a different title.

OJ claimed the publisher titled the book. Another “Duh-yeah”. Authors know that it's not only possible but probable that the title was not his. Nor the claim that this was a confession.

So now the public thinks OJ got the shunning he so well deserves and the publisher is back in our good graces for doing the right thing. Hmmm….

In reality, the publishing house used OJ as much as he used the publisher. He got his money and another 15 minutes of fame. And, after an apology, the publisher got accolades for postponing publication of a book that will, in time, see its own light of day.
