Rock the Boat

Have you read an author that Rocked the Boat? Took a chance? Did something different, something where you can feel the author's passion in her words, and you couldn't look away?
What kind of book do you think Rocks the Boat?
A book that says something? What?
Humor doesn't usually rock the boat, unless it's non-fiction humor. One of the reasons is that humor is often a defense against deep and painful emotions. Although I suppose it can be done.
I think that JR Ward Rocked the Boat by tweaking the idea of vampires, and interweaving some big concepts with powerful emotions. She has rare talent.
Years ago, I think Diane Gabaldon Rocked the Boat with OUTLANDER. A really unusual book.
So today I'm just thinking--what kind of book Rocks the Boat?

I agree with you regarding JR Ward. She took a pretty commonly used mythilogical creature and made it her own. Her books are unique and impossible to put down.
I think Natalie Collins rocks the boat in the Mormon communities, they have spoken out against her pretty loudly in the past.
ktzmom, Natalie did rock the boat! Both WIVES AND SISTERS and BEHIND CLOSED DOORS are fabulous reads.
And her new mystery series (TUTU DEADLY) is awesome. Very funny.
JR WARD may just turn me into one of those scary fan-girls.
lol ~ I understand. My co-worker and I both read the series and when we finish a new book we can just talk about it endlessly. Do authors usually have "groupies"?
ktzmom, authors like JR have groupies :-) Talking with coworkers and friends is a part of the fun of reading!
My agent is also Ward's agent--and we were just talking about her books yesterday. My agent, who is very tough to impress, is really impressed with what Ward is doing with the series.
