People Can See You!
You know that old joke--just because you're paranoid doesn't mean someone's not watching you?
I came across this Chey McCray's blog this morning. The essences of the blog is that published and unpublished authors should be careful because editors and agents can and do read blogs.
No really?
Uh, yes really. My own edtior has told me stuff that she's run across. Why are people surprised? Editors and Agents READ. It's what they do! And they are very good at research so when they are looking at buying a book, what would stop them from looking at the author's website and/or blog?
This isn't a surprise to you all, right?
So then it should follow that some readers are also reading blogs. If authors are badmouthing others, won't it tick off readers? It was annoy me. And yep, I have stopped reading one or two authors becasue I found out more than I wanted to know by reading their blogs.
Have you?
On the other hand, I have found news authors from blogs, the first one that springs to mind is Jill Shalvis.

Oh, and in a comment that has nothing to do with this blog, yesterday was a major sucky day and by evening, I just needed a break. I started rereading Maureen Child's MORE THAN FIENDS. You have to know that I generally don't reread books, but I am so glad I did with this book! It's so damn funny! If you haven't bought this book yet, what are you waiting for?

I am lucky the author blogs I read come from great people who happen to be authors. Yes reading negative comments about one author from another would turn me off.
Cele, I'm with you on negative comments. Once in a while doesn't get to me, but a regular pattern of negativity or meanness turns me off.
Thankfully (knock on wood) I have never run across a blog where one author bashed another, but if I did I think it would turn me off from the author who did the bashing.
ktzmom, I think that probably says something about you--you're too classy to hang out with people who do that sort of thing.
I just don't understand how people think they can get away with saying terrible things....
And thanks, Jen!! Knowing you NEVER reread, that compliment means even more!
Maureen--I just call 'em as I read 'em. MORE THAN FIENDS is a delightful book!
I've also stopped reading authors blogs that have a lot of negativity.
I've discovered so many new-to-me authors and have enjoyed their books and blogs.
Dru,I'm with you on too-much-negativity!
