Cell Phone Roar...

So here in California, we have a brand spanking new Hands Free While Driving Cell Phone Law.

The law is about as fierce as this baby panther. All growl, no substance. (Except this panther is adorable!)

I mean what's the point? People can still dial their phones, talk on their phones, text with their phones and be idiots.

People on cell phones drive me nuts. I've been cut off by them many times. Or seen them slow down to 40 miles an hour on the freeway because they are focusing on their conversation not driving.

I've seen the Blue Tooth Freaks waving their hands in their cars as they talk while their car swerves dangerously.

I think what it really comes down to is we just can't legislate common sense. I wish we could. But this law? I suppose it'll have some real teeth if someone on a cell phone causes an accident, but ONLY if they are holding a phone. If they are using a hands free device, then it's okay, I guess.

I dunno. What do you all think?

We've had that law for more than a year and still I see people talking on the phone while driving.

I don't drive, so now I have to watch more the drivers who turn corners and talk at the same time.

Dru, so the law isn't working where you live?

When my husband drives, we sometimes count how many drivers are on cell phones. We keep ourselves amused.

IF you don't drive, you must save on gas!

Hmmm don't drive? wow, I've considered walking to work, but my eyes are usually tearing freely and my makeup a mess by the time I walk that mile. I know, I'm a wussie.

What is it that makes people (who don't drive well in the first place) think they are any better when they are talking on the phone? Get off the phone and drive. I'm with Alexander Graham Bell, I'd rather not have a phone in my home (or in my car either.) I doubt he ever thought about a phone being in a car though.

Cele, I walk to work! Oh wait, my work is in my house :-) You're not a wuss, I wouldn't want to walk to work if I was you either.

I'm with you on BARELY wanting the phone in my house. I often just don't answer it. I've trained my kids to talk into the answering machine then I'll pick it up.

Common sense tells us that using the cell while driving will be distracting. But those without common sense...well I guess they need laws.

Hi Jen......this law is sooooo dumb. Now they're going to waste cops' time checking on people holding phones to their ears.

I don't have a problem with talking while driving. We talk to our passengers after all... but come ON. The other day on the 405 I was nearly sideswiped by a guy in his SIXTIES who was TEXTING!!

I think you're right. You can't legislate common sense...which is a damn shame.

Hey Maureen, and you're sooo right about texting. How did they miss that?

Sigh.

But yeah, we just can't legistlate common sense. I want the cops doing more important things than giving out tickets for talking on a handheld phone.
