Interview with Jennifer Lyon

Jennifer Lyon's newest book, SOUL MAGIC, will be out in November 24th 2009.

BLOOD MAGIC is the first book in a series about witches and witch hunters who must contend with...

A dangerous curse. A deadly passion. An undying love.

Sometimes it's confusing to be two people: Jennifer Apodaca and Jennifer Lyon. So to clear up any confusion, I thought that Jennifer Apodaca could interview Jennifer Lyon. Let's just say that it was...interesting.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A witch. I watched BEWITCHED and desperately wanted to be a witch like Samantha Stevens. She had it all; beauty, brains and rockin' witch powers. To this day, I'm still a little bitter that my witch powers never showed up.

Uh yeah, well, so you're not a practicing witch?

What exactly would I practice? Even if I could twitch my nose, all I'm going to get is a nose bleed. I grew up with two older brothers, and let me tell you, I tried to turn them into frogs, worms, ants, slugs, snails, skunks and one particular time, an ant eater. But they remained my annoying brothers. The power simply isn't there for me. Still a little bitter over that.

Do you believe witches actually exist?

I know witches exist. I talk to them all the time. I hang out with them. They wake me up at night with their chatter in my head. But I understand why you would ask, you see, the witches have been forced into hiding. Few mortals know much about them.

In hiding? And only you can see them?

Don't be ridiculous, anybody can see them. They look just like any woman on the street. But you wouldn't know they are a witch. They hide in plain sight for the most part.

I'm being ridicul...never mind. Okay, so the voices, uh, I mean, witches talk to you. What do they want from you?

They want me to tell their story.

The voices told you to write a book?

Yes. Evidently I didn't get witch-powers, but I got the ability to write, or so they tell me.

Do the voices tell you to do anything else?

Like what? They don't give me the Lotto numbers. Don't think I haven't asked, you know? I mean sure, I'm all about witches and their quest to bring balance back to the universe and triumph over evil. But couldn't I do even more good if I won the Lotto? I have argued that point, but the witches say they don't know the numbers in advance, that they are random picks of the universe. Whatever...

I think perhaps we should take a break. We'll continue this interview later. Say like after I've had some Tylenol washed down by straight alcohol.

Personally, I like Apple Martinis. I don't drink them very often, not ever since the time I drank half of one and my lips went numb. Mostly I drink coffee. Coffee rocks almost as much as witches rock! I love coffee! In fact, while we were doing this interview, I had myself a nice Non-fat Raspberry Latte. My fave is Raspberry Mocha, but I'm trying to cut back on the calories...speaking of calories, do you know that witches burn a LOT of calories? Just thinking of that makes me feel bitter all over again....

Seriously, I need a drink.
